Is the Free Cruise Real?
A free cruise for military members sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well here’s the breakdown. Margaritaville at Sea’s Heroes Sail Free program gives verified military members, veterans, first responders, medical personnel, educators & government employees a $0 cruise fare for themselves and one guest.
But “free” is doing some work in that sentence, and I’d rather you hear it from me than at checkout.
You’ll still pay taxes, port expenses, gratuities & on one ship a fuel supplement, and most of it is due when you book. For two people on a short sailing, that adds up to a few hundred dollars before you’ve bought a single drink or excursion: I’ll show you exactly where to find your number below.
That’s still a great deal on a cruise, and if you live within driving distance of a port, one of the best vacation options the military community has. I just want you walking in knowing the real number, because the gap between “free cruise” and the total on your confirmation screen is where most of the disappointment lives.
This is one of the five ways military families travel for almost nothing, and it’s the one I get the most questions about.
What It Actually Costs
What you can’t avoid:
- Taxes, fees & port expenses: assessed per guest and due at booking. It varies by ship and itinerary, and you’ll see it on the checkout screen before you pay.
- Gratuities: $22 per person, per night for staterooms, $25 for suites
- Fuel supplement: $15 per person, per night on Paradise. Islander doesn’t charge one right now.
Here’s how to find your specific charges: gratuities are $44 a night for two in a stateroom, and on Paradise fuel adds $30 a night. Port fees are the one piece that changes with your dates, and they appear on the final checkout screen before you enter a card, so you can price any sailing to the dollar without committing to anything. I’ll walk you through that screen in the booking steps below.
Where it gets expensive:
Onboard. I’ve seen families report final bills in the thousands once everything was added up, and it’s almost never the cruise fare that does it. The usual culprits:
- Shore excursions like swimming with the pigs & dolphin encounters are the big-ticket ones
- Drink packages & specialty dining, which aren’t included
- Stateroom upgrades beyond interior. One traveler reported being upgraded to a suite without asking, which bumped their gratuities, so check your booking before you sail.
- Wi-Fi, spa & casino
- Getting to the port, parking & a hotel night if you’re flying in
My honest take: the cruise itself is a genuinely great deal. The onboard spending is where you need a plan made at home, not at the excursion desk.
Who Is Eligible for Heroes Sail Free?
The list is broader than most people realize:
- U.S. military — active duty & veterans
- First responders — police, firefighters & EMS
- Medical personnel, including nurses
- Educators — teachers & school staff
- Government employees
Verification runs through GovX, a marketplace for the military & first responder community. You have to be verified before you book.
If you’ve ever used a military discount at an online retailer, you might already have a GovX account. Check before you create a new one.
Two Ways to Use the Heroes Offer
When you claim the offer through GovX, you’ll choose one of two deals.
The free cabin. $0 cruise fare for you & one guest in an interior stateroom on Paradise or Islander. Margaritaville picks the cabin, not you, and free cabins are a limited number on each sailing, first come, first served. Third & fourth guests in the same cabin pay the going retail rate. (The Beachcomber was just announced, it hasn’t been announced if it will be included in the Heroes program).
20% off instead. If your date has no free cabins, or you want a balcony, or you’re four people and want everyone priced together, you can take 20% off the retail fare for up to four guests on any sailing, any ship, any stateroom. It’s not free, but it’s a real discount on dates the free cabin can’t reach.
Run both before you book. For two people on a short sailing, the free cabin wins. For a family of four on a longer one, the 20% can come out close, especially when Margaritaville is running a “3rd & 4th guests free” promo, which it does several times a year.
Steps to Book Your Free Cruise
1. Create your GovX account.
Go to GovX.com and select “Create Your Free Account.” You’ll see six categories — Military, Police, Fire & EMS, Medical, Government & Education. Pick yours and upload your credential, whether that’s a military ID, DD-214 or employer verification. This isn’t instant, so give yourself a few days before you plan to book.
2. Select “Travel” from the menu.
Once you’re verified and logged in, you’ll see Category, Brand & Tickets in the top navigation. Choose Travel.
3. Choose “Cruises & Tours.”
The Travel page opens with three tabs — Hotels, Rental Cars & Cruises & Tours. You want the third one.
4. Click “Margaritaville at Sea.”
You’ll see a row of cruise partners. Margaritaville sits alongside the other lines.
5. Select the Heroes Sail Free offer.
GovX’s label for the offer reads a little differently from Margaritaville’s own wording — you’re looking for the Hero’s Sail Free listing.
6. Choose your dates, ship & stateroom — and pick free cabin or 20% off.
A calendar opens up. Free hero cabins only show on dates that still have availability, so if your date shows nothing, try the days on either side before you give up. It’s usually sold out, not unavailable to you. If nothing’s open, this is where you’d switch to the 20%-off option instead.
7. Enter passenger info & check out.
This is the screen that tells you your real number. Before you enter a card, you’ll see the itemized total:
- Cruise fare: $0.00
- Taxes, fees & port expenses: $219.90
- Gratuities: $88.00
- Total: $307.90
A note on this screenshot: when the program launched in 2022, only the hero sailed free and the guest paid a fare, which is what you see here. Since August 2024 both the first and second guests are $0, if you priced this before then, it’s worth pricing again.
If you only want to price a sailing, stop here. Nothing is charged until you submit payment.
What Else Comes With It
When the program expanded in 2024 it was billed as “Heroes Sail Free, Heroes Sail First,” and the second half added perks for everyone in the hero’s stateroom: an Express Pass for priority embarkation & disembarkation, two complimentary welcome drinks, priority luggage delivery & help booking shore excursions ahead of the crowd.
Here’s the honest caveat: Margaritaville’s current offer page doesn’t list those perks anymore. It promises “A Hero’s Welcome” onboard — the recognition of service members by name and branch that every first-hand review mentions — but not the Express Pass. If priority boarding matters to you, confirm it at booking rather than assuming.
The standard inclusions apply either way: live entertainment, select drinks, supervised kids’ programs & dining (specialty restaurants cost extra).
Destinations for Military Cruises
Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sails from the Port of Palm Beach on 2- to 5-night itineraries to the Bahamas, Key West & Puerto Plata.
Margaritaville at Sea Islander sails from Port Tampa Bay (Terminal 6) on 4- to 7-night cruises to the Bahamas, Key West, Mexico & the Caribbean, including Cozumel, Roatán, Belize & Costa Maya.
There’s also an option to stay on Grand Bahama for a few days and cruise back — worth looking at if you want more time on land.
Margaritaville at Sea Beachcomber is the new flagship, and it matters to military families in two stages. It starts sailing from Port Miami on January 9, 2027 with 4- to 8-night Eastern & Southern Caribbean itineraries. Then in October 2027 it moves to Galveston, Texas, running 4- to 7-night Western Caribbean trips from Cruise Terminal 28.
If you’re stationed anywhere in Texas or the central U.S., that second date is the one to circle. Today, using this program means flying to Florida. Once Beachcomber is in Galveston, it’s a drive for Fort Cavazos, JBSA, Fort Bliss, Sheppard, Dyess & Corpus Christi. One thing to watch: as of now the free-cabin offer covers Paradise and Islander only. Whether Beachcomber joins the free-cabin program or stays 20%-off-only hasn’t been announced yet.
Since launching in 2022, the line says it has welcomed over 100,000 heroes and their guests.
What’s Included & Other Important Details
These are the terms that catch people at checkout.
Only the first two guests sail free. The $0 fare covers you & one guest. A third or fourth person in the free cabin pays the going retail rate — though Margaritaville runs recurring promotions where they sail free. If you’re a family of four, watch for one of those windows, or price the 20%-off option instead.
You can’t sail alone. The offer doesn’t apply to single travelers. You need at least one guest in your stateroom.
Interior staterooms only, and they pick. The free cabin is an interior “We Pick” stateroom. Want a balcony? That’s the 20%-off route.
Blackout dates apply, based on availability. Holiday weeks & spring break are the tight ones. Margaritaville doesn’t publish a list.
There’s no published limit on how often you can sail, but free cabins are capacity-controlled on every departure. When they’re gone, you still get 20% off retail. Book early and stay flexible on dates.
A $299 Heroes Pass existed in 2024. It covered unlimited 2-night sailings and was retired when the free program itself went fleet-wide. You don’t need to buy anything to sail repeatedly.
Tips for Using Points & Military Perks
Don’t forget the rest of your trip. Getting to Palm Beach or Tampa is often the biggest cost of a “free” cruise, so this is where your perks earn their keep.

Is Heroes Sail Free actually free?

Can I sail alone?
No. You need at least one guest in your stateroom.
Can I sail without my service member if they’re deployed?
This is the question I get most from military spouses, and I’ll be straight with you: the free fare is tied to the verified GovX member, which generally means the hero needs to be on the booking. Margaritaville hasn’t published a policy either way. If your spouse is deployed or TDY, call Margaritaville directly before you book rather than assuming — phone reps have more room to work with than the website does.
What if we get orders after we book?
Deployment is covered in writing. Margaritaville’s ticket contract says GovX bookings won’t be charged change fees when you’re modifying a sailing because of deployment — bring proof of orders. PCS isn’t named, so if orders drop before a sailing, call reservations with the orders in hand and ask for the same treatment. Standard cancellation applies otherwise: free changes more than 60 days out, $50 at 8–59 days, no changes inside 7 days. Cancellation charges run from 0% far out to 100% inside 30 days, and can differ by promotion.
Do my kids sail free?
Not automatically. The free fare covers the first two guests. Third & fourth guests in the free cabin pay retail — but check current promotions, because Margaritaville runs “3rd & 4th guests free” sales several times a year.
How many times can I use it?
There’s no published limit, as long as free cabins are available on your dates.
Do veterans qualify?
Yes. Active duty & veterans both, along with first responders, nurses, educators & government employees.
